Jose Lopes Sousa

New Bedford – Jose Lopes Sousa, age 88, of New Bedford, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Maria A. (Vicente) Sousa. They had been married for 65 years.

Jose was born in Corvo, Azores to the late Inacio Sousa and Maria V. (Avelar) Sousa. He moved to this area in 1971, where he worked as a weaver for Berkshire Hathaway Mills for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Maria; his daughter, Gloria Jorge and her husband Joe of North Dartmouth; his son, Steven Sousa of New Bedford; grandchildren, Tim S. Jorge and his wife Lynn and Chris L. Jorge and his wife Amy; as well as 3 great-grandchildren, Tyler Jorge, Grayson Jorge and Emery Jorge.

Jose’s visiting hours will be held Thursday morning, January 16th from 9:00 A.M. -10:00 A.M. at Perry Funeral Home and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
