Douglas (Katz) Reid Quarles

d. July 5, 2020

New Bedford - Douglas Reid Quarles, son of the late, Robert M. Quarles, Jr. and the late Elsie L. (Washington), Quarles, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 5, 2020. Katz, as he was called by family and close friends, was a 10-year veteran of the United State Navy where he further developed his love of food and cooking. He later received his degree in the Culinary Arts program at Bristol Community College and worked at several restaurants in the United States and abroad including locally in the Greater New Bedford area. He was naturally funny and made everyone he ever met laugh hysterically. Some say he missed his calling; he should have been a comedian.

Most important to him was his love of faith with the teachings of the Jehovah's Witnesses. He previously attended many meetings with the Fairhaven Congregation, he will be missed by many who came to know him there.

He leaves behind his longtime Life Partner of 17 years, Shelley Bieu of New Bedford, MA his 3 children, Crystal Quarles of MD, Dezmond Quarles, of NC and Ryan Hardaway of Boston, MA. His brothers, Lee I. Quarles and his wife Yvonne of FL, David W. Quarles, of Leominster, MA, Gerald A. Quarles and his wife Delphine of FL, Paul G. Quarles of FL, Gary E. Quarles of New Bedford, MA and his sisters, Leslie K. Thorpe and Alison A. Spinola and her husband Barry of New Bedford, MA. Both of New Bedford. Also leaving behind a host of nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Katz.
