New Bedford – Maria M. (Medeiros) Batista, age 63, of New Bedford, MA passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Jose Batista, with whom she shared 43 wonderful years of marriage.

Maria was born in Agua de Pau, São Miguel, Azores, and was the loving daughter of the late Francisco Medeiros and Ana (Cabral) Medeiros. She had worked in the shipping department for Reebok Sporting Goods Company for many years.

Maria had been an active communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a member of the Holy Ghost Society and Grupo de Oração. She enjoyed crocheting, doing word searches and shopping. She especially enjoyed time spent helping at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Her best times spent were with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Jose Batista; her sons, Rui Batista and his wife Christine and Carlos Batista and his wife Susan; her daughter, Jennifer Batista; 7 grandchildren, Lucia Batista, Soleil Batista, Jagger Batista, Maddox Batista, Grayson Carreiro, Leo Batista and Jude Batista. She is also survived by her 2 goddaughters, who were like her own, Kimberly Carreiro and Felicia Carreiro; as well as several nieces, nephews and beloved cousins.

Maria was predeceased by her parents, Francisco and Ana Medeiros and her beloved sister, Lucia Carreiro.

Maria’s visiting hours will be held on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Perry Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday, beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
