Cleofe Nieves Mendez

Cleofe Nieves Mendez, age 88, formerly of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 9, 1937, in Moca, Puerto Rico, Cleofe was the cherished son of the late Eusebio Nieves and Adelaida Mendez. Although born in Moca, he lived most of his life in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, a place he proudly called home.

Cleofe dedicated more than 20 years of service to the Municipality of Aguadilla, where he worked in the Maintenance Department for the town government. He was known for his strong work ethic, his willingness to help others, and his commitment to serving his community. Cleofe was well loved and respected throughout Aguadilla and Moca, and his legacy of kindness, service, and humility will long be remembered by all who knew him.

Cleofe was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his twelve children: Edwin Nieves, Wilo Nieves, Quique Nieves, Rubén Nieves, Freddy Nieves, Camila Nieves, Daisy Nieves, and from his second marriage, José Nieves, Adrián Nieves, Jessica Nieves, Joana Nieves, and Yonela Nieves; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved him dearly.

Cleofe will forever be remembered for his love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his generous heart. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Cleofe's visitation will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Perry Funeral Home located at 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford, MA 02740. The visiting hours will take place from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 P.M. It is noted that due to inclement weather conditions, his burial will occur at a later date.
