David "Big Dave" Sturgeon, aged 76, of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 14, 1948, in New Bedford, he was the beloved son of the late Glenn Sturgeon Sr. and Alice (Medeiros) Sturgeon-Pierce.
David was a skilled carpenter who took immense pride in his work, building numerous houses and beautiful decks throughout the South Coast Area. His hands-on approach extended beyond carpentry; he loved tackling challenges, often immersing himself in the intricate wiring problems of motorcycles and vintage cars alongside his good friend, Tom Pequita. The motorcycle community recognized him not just for his craftsmanship but for the many motorcycles he built and repaired over the years. It was while riding that David found an unparalleled sense of peace and joy.
David will be remembered for his passion, craftsmanship, and the deep love he held for his family and friends.
His family brought him boundless happiness, particularly his cherished surprise visits from his "little angels," Gretchen and Anja. David embraced his role as a father and grandfather, and he is survived by his daughters, Nicole Barboza, Jamie Sturgeon, and Ashley Larguinho. His legacy continues through his eight grandchildren: Brianna Corte-Real, Dillon Corte-Real, Naythen Sturgeon, Ethen Sturgeon, Gretchen Sivertsen, Anja Sivertsen, Landon Larguinho, and Leland Larguinho, as well as three great-grandchildren. David also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.
His siblings, Everett Sturgeon, Glenda Charest, Peter Sturgeon, Steve Sturgeon, and Mark Sturgeon, will also remember him fondly. David was predeceased by his daughter, Kerrie Sturgeon, and several siblings: Glenn Sturgeon, Paula Simmons, Michael Sturgeon Sr., Roberta Nadeau, and James Sturgeon.
A memorial service to honor David's life will be held with his cremains at Perry Funeral Home on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
