Dinarte Gouveia, age 83, of New Bedford, MA passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria L. (Jacinto) Gouveia.
Dinarte was born in Sao Miguel, Azores and was the beloved son of the late Augustinho Gouveia and Maria (deOliveiro) Gouveia. He was a strong, hardworking, and devoted family man. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Dinarte was the heart of every gathering-always ready with a prank, laugh, and a smile that lit up the room.
He had a huge heart and lived with a deep sense of generosity. He would gladly go hungry to give you the food off f his plate, because caring for others was second nature to him. His world revolved around his family, and he found his greatest joy in simply being surrounded by the people he loved.
A dedicated father, he built his legacy not only through hard work, but also through the love, laughter, and values he poured into his children and family. He loved ice cream, never missed a chance to watch wresting or The Three Stooges, and lived life with a balance of humor, strength, and heart.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion that will forever be carried on by his family and friends. His memory will be cherished and his presence deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
He is survived by his children, Susana DeFreitas and her spouse Romeu DeFreitas, Helen Valardan and her spouse Pastor Carlos Valardan, Maria Frias and her spouse Paul Frias, Olga Oliveira and her partner Patrick laTouche, Breno Gouveia and his spouse Zelia Hermenegildo, Grace Walsh and her spouse Pastor Kenneth Walsh, Nelson Gouveia and his spouse Stephanie Gouveia, and Lisa Lawler and her spouse Brendan Lawler; his grandchildren, Jeremiah DeFreitas and his spouse Amanda DeFreitas, Jennifer Cicerone and her spouse David Cicerone, Johnathan Valardan, Samuel Valardan and his spouse Cristiane Valardan, Timothy Gouveia and his fiance Taynara Goncalves, Abigail Frias Clark and her spouse Cody S. Clark, Breanna Oliveira, NJ Oliveira, Brandon Gouveia and his spouse Briana Gouveia, Nicholas Gouveia and his spouse Katie Gouveia, John Walsh, Hannah Walsh, Serena Gouveia, Mason Gouveia, Asher Lawler, Adin Lawler, and Aria Lawler; as well as his great-grandchildren, Livia Rose and Ella Grace, Blake Gouveia, Drew Gouveia, Kenadie Gouveia, Ford Gouveia and Lincoln Gouveia.
Dinarte’s visiting hours will be held on Thursday evening at Perry Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. -8:00 P.M. His funeral will take place in the funeral home Friday morning, beginning at 10:00 A.M. with a service to be held at 11:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
The care of these arrangements has been entrusted to Perry Funeral Home, located at 111 Dartmouth St., New Bedford, MA 02740. At the rear of the funeral home, an ample lighted parking lot awaits, along with a handicap-accessible ramp entrance equipped with an automatic open door, ensuring ease for all who wish to pay their respects.
