New Bedford – Hermenegildo V. Almeida, age 86, of Westport, MA, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on April 13, 1939, in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, Hermenegildo was the beloved son of the late Victor Inacio and Alexandra Rosa Delgado. Throughout his life, he worked as a machine operator at both Chamberlain Manufacturing and New England Rope, contributing to his community while supporting his family.
Hermenegildo or Victor, as most people knew him as, was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, always cheering for his favorite team. He loved to go fishing, and loved to take walks on the beach with the family dogs. He served in the Lisbon Army and then became a Merchant Marine, where he found joy in traveling, exploring new places, cultures, and learning the language of every country he spent time in. Above all, Hermenegildo was a devoted family man, consistently placing his loved ones at the center of his life. He made any sacrifice necessary to ensure his family was provided for, and never missed any important events.
Hermenegildo Almeida will be remembered for his love of family, his passions, and the positive impact he had on all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter, Charnelle Baker and her husband, Robert Baker; his grandchildren, Kristofer Almeida of Pennsylvania, Derell Conceicao of Westport, and Alana Almeida-Amaral of Westport; as well as his great-grandchildren, Leviathyn, Charlee Rayne, Remy, and Kade Almeida. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings, Jose Victor Almeida and Lourenco Victor Almeida, both of Cape Verde, along with many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember his spirit and warmth.
Hermenegildo was predeceased by his sibling, Manuel Victor Almeida.
