Irene Camacho

Irene Camacho, lifelong resident of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 after a brief stay at Sacred Heart Nursing Home. She was surrounded by loved ones.

She was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria DaSilva Camacho. She was predeceased by her siblings: Manuel, John and Joseph Camacho, Maggie Ventura, Edna Souza and Daniel Camacho.

Irene was a 1951 graduate of New Bedford High School and went immediately to work for Cameo Curtains. She was one of the original office staff when the company opened-her employee number was 3 and she worked there until her retirement 42 years later.

She was an avid reader, a Boston sports fan, and enjoyed cheering on the Notre Dame football team. She especially loved watching the Red Sox. If there was a game on television, you can be sure she was watching it!

Irene’s pleasant nature endeared her to everyone she met. She delighted in having the neighbors’ grandchildren drop to say hello and would treat them with cookies. The postman and trash collectors enjoyed receiving candy bars. One neighbor fondly remembered her as “The Queen of the Cul-de-sac!”

Although she was never married or had children, she was the loving Godmother/Tia/Auntie Irene to 4 generations of nieces and nephews. Her home was filled with their photos, and her heart was full of love each and every one. The Camacho family has lost their Matriarch but the memory of her love and kindness will live on.

The family wishes to thank Sacred Heart Nursing Home and Community Nurse Hospice staff for their kindness and gentle care they gave her while she was there.

Irene's visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at Perry Funeral Home from 9:00 A.M. -9:30 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M., with interment immediately following at Rural Cemetery.
