Jacinto Rego

Jacinto Rego, age 101, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Gloriana Rego and the son of the late Augusto and Julieta Rego.

Jacinto was born on May 10, 1925, in Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande, São Miguel. In 1982, he immigrated to the United States, beginning a new chapter of his life while carrying with him the values, traditions, and work ethic that had always defined him. Prior to his arrival in New Bedford, Jacinto worked cultivating crops and tending to the land in São Miguel. After settling in New Bedford, he worked at Gaspar’s Linguiça until his retirement in 1993.

Jacinto was a true hard worker throughout his entire life. Even after retirement, he never truly stopped working. Until his passing, he could often be found tending to his crops in his beloved garden. Working the land brought him great joy and purpose, and his garden was a reflection of the care, patience, and dedication he carried throughout his life.

Above all, Jacinto was a devoted family man who loved his family immensely. He leaves behind his three loving daughters, Maria DeMelo, wife of the late José DeMelo, of New Bedford; Maria Faria, wife of João Faria, of Dartmouth; and Ana Sousa, wife of Manuel Sousa, of Dartmouth. He also leaves behind his seven grandchildren, Steve DeMelo, Jason DeMelo, Kenneth DeMelo, Gliceria Lalli, Brittany Faria, Melanie Pereira, and Shelly Sousa, as well as 12 great-grandchildren, who were a cherished part of his life and legacy.

Jacinto was the last of his eleven siblings to pass, bringing to a close a remarkable generation of his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Maria, Manuel, José, Augusto, Isaura, João, Cremilde, Beatriz, Deodato, and Herculano.

At 101 years old, Jacinto leaves behind more than a lifetime of memories. He leaves behind the love he gave so freely to his family, the lessons he taught through his hard work and perseverance, and a legacy that will continue through his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and generations to come.

He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of the family he loved so dearly.

Jacinto’s vsiting hours will be at Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. New Bedford, Ma. on Thursday from 8:00 A.M. – 9:30 A.M.followed by a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Rural Cemetery.
