John Rodrick "Chubby" Gomes, Jr.

John Rodrick “Chubby” Gomes Jr., 83, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on September 18, 2025. Born and raised in New Bedford, he was the beloved son of the late John Gomes and the late Elsie (Martin) Gomes and remained a lifelong resident of the city he cherished.

Chubby dedicated his life to hard work as a skilled fish cutter, a trade he proudly practiced for many years. Outside of work, his greatest joy came from his family. He treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he especially enjoyed traveling on vacations with his devoted wife, Patricia.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Gomes; daughters, Joan Marie Gomes and Michelle (Barnes) Casey and her husband Danny; sons, Anthony “Bobby” St. Jacques, John R. Gomes III and his wife Paula, Richard Gomes and his wife Sandra, and Donald Gomes. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Bobby St. Jacques, Meaghan St. Jacques, Mason St. Jacques, Jimmy Gusti, Kristin Souza, Alicia Gomes, Ashley Gomes, Anthony Gomes, Alex Gomes, DJ Gomes, Rob Barnes, Deaven Barnes, Dallas Barnes, Troy Mederios, Roland Gomes Jr., Maranda Gomes, and Kelsey Gomes, as well as by his many cherished great-grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.

Chubby was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Marie (St. Jacques) Gomes; his daughter, Pamala (Barnes) Monteiro; his son, Roland Gomes; his sisters, Virginia Gomes, Linda Gomes, Carol Gomes, Dale (Gomes) Spaziano, Barbara (Gomes) Chumack and Marie Gomes; and his brothers, August “Goo-Goo” Gomes, Robert “Bobby” Gomes, Richard “Dickie” Gomes,and Manuel “Manny Goat” Gomes.

Chubby will be remembered for his hard working spirit, his deep love for his family, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
