Jose De Melo, aged 72, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished husband of Maria do Carmo (Rego) De Melo.
Born on April 9, 1954, in Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, Azores, Jose was the beloved son of the late Antonio De Melo and Maria Teresa (Tavares) De Melo. Throughout his life, Jose engaged in a variety of pursuits and professions. He skillfully contributed to the construction field and worked at Brittany Dye Manufacturing, as well as at St. Luke’s Hospital. Beyond his professional endeavors, Jose embraced a life enriched by his passions. He found great joy in fishing, traveling, gardening, and painting. Additionally, he delighted in undertaking numerous household projects, channeling creativity and dedication into each task. Above all, Jose’s greatest devotion and source of happiness were his grandchildren, whom he loved and adored deeply. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
Jose is survived by his devoted wife, Maria do Carmo De Melo; his sons, Steve De Melo and his wife Melissa, Jason De Melo and his wife Liza, and Kenneth De Melo and his wife Andrea. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Isabella De Melo-Rivera and her husband Joel, Giovanni, Jaiden, Antony, Nicholas, and Leah. His life continues through many nieces, nephews, and godchildren who held him in great affection. Jose is also survived by his sister, Graça Melo, and his brother, Emanuel De Melo, and his father-in-law Jacinto Rego.
In addition to his parents, Jose was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Dinarte Melo, and his mother-in-law, Gloriana Rego.
Jose’s life will be celebrated with visiting hours on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Perry Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Thursday morning, beginning at 9:00 AM in the funeral home, and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will immediately follow at Rural Cemetery.
