Jose M. Telheiro age 91, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Rosarinha (Caetano) Telheiro.
Jose was born on March 16, 1935, in Santa Cruz, Sao Miguel, Acores and was the cherished son of the late Herculano Moniz Telheiro and Rosarinha Moniz Telheiro. He had resided in New Bedford and later at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth.
He was a communicant of St. John Baptist Church until its closing, and moved over to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He loved soccer and was a true fan of Benfica, he also enjoyed cooking and was very good at it. He had been a chef back in Sao Miguel and Terceira until he moved to the United States in 1971, where he worked as a presser for Cliftex Corporation and later opened his own little take-out store called Salsicharia Moderna on County Street.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rosarinha; his nieces, Grace Telheiro-Furtado and Maria Furtado, who took care of him until the end; his brothers, Manuel Telheiro and his wife Maria of New Bedford, Herculano Telheiro and his wife Eduarda of Florida; his sister, Rosarinha Soares of Rosario, Lagoa, Sao Miguel; as well as several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
He was also the father of the late Ana Maria Telheiro and brother of the late Joao Telheiro, Rosa Cabecinha and Conceicao Ventura.
Jose’s visiting hours and funeral services will be held on Monday September 14, 2026. Visiting hours will be held at Perry Funeral Home from 8:00 A.M. – 9:30 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts, which offers convenient facilities, including a lighted parking lot and wheelchair accessibility for attendees.
