Lillian Cabral Goes passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 19th at St, Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of the late Filento "Felix" Goes for 50 years and a devoted mother to her daughter, Kathleen Goes, In her 99 years of life Lillian witnessed the Great Depression, World War II (during which she worked at Camp Edwards in Falmouth), the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as well as the Iraq and Iran Wars. She survived breast cancer twice. Once in 1988 and again in 2001.
Lillian loved to dance and sing and would talk about going to dances at the local social club on Saturday nights wearing a flower in her hair and of course being chaperoned by her older sister, Hilda..
In 1948 she married the love of her life and in 1951 their daughter was born.
Lillian worked as a billing clerk at Hemingway Trucking Company before she transitioned to Dartmouth Finishing Corporation for 27 years. She then worked for the New Bedford Health Department Well Baby Clinic until her retirement.
Lillian was very active at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in New Bedford where she was raised and received all her Sacraments. She was a member of the Mt, Carmel Women's Club and became its President for several years, She was an active member of the Legion of Mary and an active Choir member at Mt, Carmel together with her husband and daughter. She and her husband also sang in the Diocesan Choir under the direction of Rev. William Campbell and the choirs at St. John's Church in Westport and St. Marys's Church in Dartmouth where her daughter was the organist and choir director.. .
She was Chairwoman for the Catholic Charities Appeal for 3 years when it was run as a door to door campaign.
She volunteered monthly at the Market Ministries Solanus Food Pantry for 20 years.
Slot machines were a favorite leisure activity for Lillian. If any loose coins were left unattended in the house you could rest assured that Lillian would scoff them up to save for her occasional trips to Foxwoods with the Mt, Carmel Seniors.
She was a true Red Sox fan as well. She liked it when they won and didn't mind too much if they lost as long as the Yankees lost too.
Everyone who met her loved her and described her as cute and funny. Her caregivers all said it was a pleasure to take care of her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her daughter who she loved so much and who loved her as much in return...
