Fairhaven – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria de Lurdes (Barbosa) Batista, age 93, of Acushnet, MA, who left this world on Monday, May 26, 2025, at Our Lady’s Haven, surrounded by the love of her family. Maria was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Joao Batista.
Born on September 13, 1931, in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel, Acores, Maria was the cherished daughter of the late Joao Joaquin Barbosa and Maria Rosario (Costa) Barbosa. Her work life was marked by her tenure as a floor worker for various local mills, a testament to her strong work ethic and dedication.
Maria's spirit shone brightest in the company of her beloved family. She found immense joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, nurturing bonds that will be cherished for generations to come. Her devotion to her family was matched only by her unwavering faith, particularly within the embrace of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a community she held dear to her heart.
Maria de Lurdes (Barbosa) Batista will be remembered for her warmth, family devotion, and steadfast faith. Her legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those she touched.
Maria is lovingly remembered by her children, Joao Batista and his wife Lucia, Maria Conceicao Bento and her husband Jose, Maria Rosario Macaroco and her husband Antonio, Maria de Lurdes Sousa and her husband Antonio, and Maria Natividade Correia and her husband Robert. She is also survived by her 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, as well as her daughter-in-laws, Conceicao Batista and Helen Batista. Maria was preceded in death by her sons, the late Jose Batista and Mariano Batista, and her daughter, Alda Maria Batista and great-grandson Kevin Santos Jr. She is further survived by several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
Maria’s life will be celebrated with visiting hours at Perry Funeral Home on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Her funeral will be held on Friday, beginning in the funeral home at 10:30 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:30 A.M. Burial will take place immediately afterwards at St. John’s Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford.
