Maria Jose (DaCunha) Costeira

Maria Jose (Pinho DaCunha) Costeira, age 84, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on November 4, 2025. She was the loving wife of 61 years to the late Arlindo DaSilva Costeira, who predeceased her in 2023.

Born on November 3, 1941, in Sao Jacinto, Aveiro, Portugal, Maria was the beloved daughter of the late Possidonio DaCunha and Maria Rosaria (DePinho) DaCunha. Her early life in Portugal was filled with the rich culture and traditions of her homeland, which she carried with her throughout her life.

Maria is survived by her children: Arlindo Costeira and wife Aurea of New Bedford, Antonio Costeira and wife Celeste of Acushnet, Joaquim Costeira and wife Lucy of Fairhaven, Manuel Costeira and wife Lurdes of New Bedford, Lazaro Costeira and wife Sandy of New Bedford, and Fatima Ozdogru and husband Sertac of Fairhaven. She cherished her role as a grandmother to 14 grandchildren and a great-grandmother to 23 great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of love that will be cherished by her family for generations to come.

In addition to her immediate family, Maria is survived by her sibling, Antonio Pinho DaCunha, and his late wife, Maria Jose DaCunha, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will fondly remember her warmth and compassion. Maria will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her spirit and love will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Maria’s life will be honored during visiting hours held on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Perry Funeral Home from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:30 A.M., with burial to follow at Rural Cemetery.
