Maria “Sizaltina” DeFreitas, 80 years old, passed away on Wednesday, January 24th from a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, Diabetes and ultimately pneumonia. She was surrounded by her loving, devoted family during her final moments where she passed peacefully at the local hospital.
What mattered most to Maria, also known as “Tina”, was having her family all together. Originating from Flores, Azores, Portugal, Tina had called New Bedford home alongside her late husband, Antonio Luis DeFreitas, who now rests beside her for eternity. Tina worked locally in the manufacturing field, before retiring to spend time with those she loved most- her family. If you knew Tina, you can contest that she was selfless, and always put her family and others first. Renowned for her kindness, resilience, and nurturing spirit, she divided her time between crafting Portuguese delicacies in the kitchen and tending to her garden's roses and hydrangeas.
Tina is survived by her children and grandchildren. Eldest daughter, Filomena Avelar, with husband Jose Avelar and youngest son, Jose Antonio DeFreitas. She had joy in raising all her grandchildren and cherished the role of Vovó to: Jose Avelar Jr., Tabitha Avelar, Austin DeFreitas, and Logan DeFreitas, including great grandchildren Alicen Sizaltina Avelar Vieira, and Johanna Silva. Tina is survived by sisters Otilia Silva, Enes Cardoso, and sister in-law, Enes Jorge. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Tina extends a tribute to her departed brothers, sisters, and other family members who have reunited with her in heaven.
