Maria Das Dores Do Carmo (De Jesus) Gago, age 87, of New Bedford, MA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Sacred Heart Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Domingos C. Gago.
Born on September 12, 1938, in Setubal, Portugal, Maria was the cherished daughter of the late Francisco Jose De Jesus and Maria Dolores (Do Carmo) De Jesus. Maria was a devout Catholic and shared her faith with those around her. She found peace in Our Lady of Fatima and often prayed the rosary.
She was happiest when caring for others, especially for her family. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was the kind of mother that everyone would've loved to have. She cared for, loved and taught others to love by example. Most of all she was the best Avo anyone could've asked for. There are no words to describe the love she had for her grandchildren. The bond they shared will always be present in every aspect of their lives. God then blessed her with a great granddaughter when she was losing her beloved husband. She is leaving a little girl who will forever remember her Avo’s sopinhas, love and kindness.
She always saw the good in others and would do anything for a friend or stranger. Everyone who knew her, enjoyed being in her company. She had many lifelong friends and made new ones along the way everywhere she went. She enjoyed watching Portuguese shows, wrestling, reading her cookbooks and sewing in her free time. Most of all, she loved cooking for others and making sure everyone around her was well fed.
Our lives are forever changed but our memories will always live in our hearts.
Maria is survived by her daughter, Isabel DaSilva, and her son, Domingos C. Gago and his wife Lucy. She was a proud grandmother to Alexia DaSilva, Sarah DaSilva, and Katia DaSilva, and to her late grandchildren Abby, Aaden, and Myla Rose Gago, each of whom brought joy to her heart. She is also the great-grandmother of Freida DaSilva.
In addition to her immediate family, Maria is survived by her siblings Elisabete Ferreira, Cidalia Nascimento, and Fatima De Jesus, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember her fondly.
