Maria Ilda Sebastiao

Maria Ilda Sebastiao, age 91, of New Bedford, MA, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 11, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 16, 1934, in Ribeira Quente, Sao Miguel, Azores, she was the cherished daughter of the late Joao Vieira Pina and Maria (Rosanina) Pina.

Maria was the devoted wife of the late Jose F. Sebastiao, with whom she shared a life of love and companionship. Her work as a seamstress for a local clothing manufacturer brought her joy and a sense of contribution to her community. However, her true passion lay in nurturing her beautiful garden, filled with flowers that reflected her spirit, and spending quality time with her family, which was her greatest treasure.

Maria is survived by her three children: Geraldine Oliveira and her husband Paulo, Madelena Sebastiao, and Joe Sebastion and his wife Renee. She also leaves behind three adoring grandchildren: Stephanie Constantino and her husband Joe, Jonathan Oliveira, and Justin Sebastion; as well as additional great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews from near and far. She held a special place in her heart for her siblings, including her sisters, Carlota Vieira Medeiros and brother-in-law Pedro Medeiros, Alda Oliveira, and Fatima Tavares and her husband Henrique Tavares. 

She was predeceased by her brother, Joao Vieira Pina, who will be remembered fondly in our hearts.

Maria’s family invites all those wishing to pay their respects to join them for visitation and funeral services on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Visiting hours will take place from 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. at Perry Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will take place immediately after at Rural Cemetery.

Maria will be deeply missed, as her love and warmth touched the lives of all who knew her. Her legacy of family devotion and appreciation for life will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to call her mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Perry Funeral Home, located at 111 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford.
