New Bedford – Thomas John Branquinho, passed at his home, on Monday, January 13, 2025 at the age of 55. Thomas, well-known as “Tommy” or “Big Tom”, was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all.
Born and raised in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Maria G. Branquinho and Prim Branquinho, both of St. Michael, Azores.
Thomas, being the youngest of eight growing up, looked up to his older siblings. He cherished his memories with them and their childhood friends. He worked in construction before he went on to build a reputation for himself as a scalloper for many years on the Theresa, Nordic Pride, Celtic and other reputable fishing vessels in the Whaling City. When home from sea he found joy in cooking and hosting family gatherings, traveling, going camping, hunting, and skiing with friends. Beyond his trade and hobbies, his love for his family was always his greatest joy and his children were his proudest accomplishment.
Despite the losses he endured over the years, he will always be remembered for his generosity, great sense of humor, and love of story-telling. In every story or joke he told you could feel the unwavering love he had for that person. Especially, when it came to sharing stories of the past of his older brothers. His laughter could lift the heaviest heart and his larger-than-life personality touched the lives of everyone he met.
Thomas is survived by his four children, Brandon Branquinho, Alyssa Branquinho, Evan Branquinho and Emma Branquinho. His grandchildren, Carter Branquinho, Julian Araujo, Logan Araujo, and anticipated granddaughter Adrianne Araujo. His siblings, Tina Costa, George Branquinho, Arlene Esteireiro, and Robert Branquinho. He was predeceased by his late brothers David Branquinho, Gilbert Branquinho, and Joseph Branquinho.
He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins near and far who he loved like his own.
Thomas will be deeply missed but he would want us to smile through the tears, remembering the laughter, love, and unforgettable moments he gave us all.
